Why Should Edupreneurs Invest More On Teacher Empowerment?
Mr. Mehta was running a group of schools. Each of the schools commanded a strength of 1500 students and nearly a hundred teachers teaching the entire K-12 session. He started realizing that the popularity of the school was on the decline and the wind in favor of new admissions started blowing towards a couple of new schools. One factor he agreed upon regarding this decline was the quality of the teachers. During a discussion with an educational consultant, he stated that he needs a dedicated support mechanism for the empowerment of teachers so that he could at least sustain the glory of his institution as it existed.
“I understand it is very important, Sir.” He stated. “But tell me, how much would it cost if I have to put in place an empowerment program for the teachers?”
The consultant smiled and replied “Sorry Mr. Mehta. Your question should be differently structured. You should ask, “how much would it cost me if I do not empower my teachers.
Edupreneurs should treat teacher empowerment not as an expense, but as the highest-leverage investment in the education business. The question of empowering teachers in educational institutions has been a matter of debate over decades. Many questions are asked by the educational management though some of them are indeed admissible. The quality of investment matters more than the percentage. Research shows that professional development is more effective when it is sustained, collaborative, content-focused, practice-oriented, supported by coaching, and accompanied by feedback and reflection.
A 2025 meta-analysis of 128 high-quality studies also found that teacher professional development improves student achievement on average, although the effects vary depending on how programs are designed and implemented.
The broad issues raised by the edupreneurs are as under:
- I spend money and resources; but one day the empowered teacher comes and tells us she got a job in another school and wants to be relieved.
- I find even if I spend the money and advise them to improve. They come back and tell me “Sir, finally we must teach only the textbook. For examination, that alone matters,
- Boards are introducing new things one after another. How much will I spend to address each one of them?
- Most training programs become more like a ceremony. After the program is over, people conveniently forget what was provided as a valuable input. There is no follow up. It really means your investment has gotten into a drain.
- On many occasions, they feel that it is only a statutory obligation as the Boards want some specified hours of participation. Remarks one teacher “Sir, my quota is over. I do not have to attend any further.” So, they feel it is an obligation to learn.
And there could be other reasons too.
While one could find reasons to justify these statements for their validity or otherwise, the question whether the teachers should be continuously empowered is not a matter of debate.
Edupreneurs need to understand that the future of their institutions will depend on the quality of their teachers and the impact they make on the learning process. The importance of school infrastructure is slowly declining. Why?
- Teachers are the delivery engines of quality learning dynamics in the institutions. The output of this engine must certainly be high.
- Empowered teachers try to create an authentic, reliable, and comfortable learning environment in classrooms.
- Empowered teachers provide opportunities for using differential thinking skills and facilitate problem solving approaches among the learners.
- Empowered teachers enjoy constructive and creative environment in the classrooms as that provides learning opportunities even to them.
- Empowered teachers consider themselves as co-learners along with the students in the classrooms.
- Empowered teachers encourage a culture of learning in the classroom rather than completing the syllabus or engaging with the curriculum.
- Empowered teachers use technology as a pedagogy rather than as novelty or entertainment in the classroom.
- Empowered teachers consider learning as a journey and the students as their co-travelers in discovering and improving the ecosystem.
- Empowered teachers tend to stay fearless in seeking and soliciting questions which are necessarily challenging.
- Empowered teachers tend to reach out to the learners to ensure equity and excellence. They encourage discovery and innovation.
It is observed that empowered teachers tend to become leaders of the learning process and engage in self-learning and self-directed learning to stay connected with the changing universe of learning. That adds to the value profile of the institution and facilitates leaders in the system for the future dates.
Managements need to see teacher empowerment not as a HR issue that needs to be addressed, but they should consider this as a ‘transformational strategy’ of the institution to scale higher peaks of excellence. The face value of the institution and the brand of the institution go very high in the shortest period.
A group of empowered teachers in any organization act as strong pillars for continued growth as confidence indicators for the parents. They try to live with a growth mindset rather than sustainability. It is noted that investments on even 5% of the teachers has an impact on the rest of the 95% of teachers. It leads to holistic transformation.
Empowered teachers become the nucleus of innovation and creativity. They drive the performance of their colleagues by pumping more dopamine through their peer engagement.
