School safety is often discussed within the boundaries of the school campus. But safety does not begin at the school gate, it begins with the journey a child takes to reach school and return home.
Are school transport systems designed with safety in mind?
From school buses and drivers to attendants, route planning, vehicle maintenance and student behaviour, how effectively are the different elements of school transport planned and monitored?
What happens beyond the school gate?
Traffic congestion, unsafe crossings, speeding vehicles, roadside parking, poorly planned pick-up and drop-off points and pedestrian movement can create significant risks. How well are schools prepared to manage these everyday challenges?
Who is responsible for a child's journey to school?
School authorities, transport providers, drivers, parents, students and the wider community all play a role. How can this shared responsibility be better understood and strengthened?
Can road safety become part of school culture?
Beyond rules, instructions and compliance, how can schools help students develop awareness, responsible behaviour and respect for road safety in their everyday lives?
The question is not simply whether students reach school safely, but whether the entire journey has been thoughtfully designed, managed and prepared for.
In Series 2 of Safety in Schools, let us examine the relationship between traffic, transport and school safety, bringing together perspectives from experienced school leaders and education practitioners.
A conversation to understand risks, question existing practices and explore how schools can contribute to safer journeys for students and staff.

WeMeet details
Date: 28 October 2026
Time: 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM IST (60 Minutes Session)
Mode: Online via Zoom
Why WeMeet?
Because school safety cannot be addressed through a single checklist. It requires educators and school leaders to look beyond the school campus and examine the journeys, systems, behaviours and environments that shape a child's everyday experience of safety.
WeMeet brings educators together to:
✔ Examine how traffic and transport influence school safety
✔ Understand the risks associated with school journeys and surrounding roads
✔ Reflect on school transport systems, routes and pick-up and drop-off practices
✔ Identify vulnerabilities beyond the physical boundaries of the school
✔ Explore the shared responsibility of schools, parents, transport providers and students
✔ Share experiences and perspectives from different school contexts
✔ Consider how road safety awareness can become part of school culture
Not another webinar. A space to think, question and learn together.
As part of the WeMeet Dialogue Series | Safety in Schools – Issues & Concerns, participants can access a copy of the book School Safety, authored by Mr G. Balasubramanian and published by the Quality Council of India (QCI).
We encourage educators to read this valuable resource as they reflect on the key themes and concerns surrounding safety in schools.
