Choice or Chance: Finding Purpose and Joy in the Teaching Profession
Are You Here by Choice or Chance?
It is a question many educators have heard at some point in their careers - "Are you in teaching by choice or by chance?"
For some, teaching was a childhood dream. They chose this path with certainty, passion, and purpose. For others, life unfolded differently. Opportunities appeared unexpectedly, circumstances changed, and teaching became a profession they entered by chance.
But why do we place so much emphasis on this question?
Does it really matter how you arrived here, or does it matter more what you do once you are here?
Teaching is one of the most influential and noble professions in the world. It shapes minds, nurtures character, inspires dreams, and transforms lives. Yet many teachers continue to feel the need to justify how they entered the profession, especially when others ask whether teaching was their first choice.
The truth is that life is rarely a straight path. It is a journey filled with choices, chances, unexpected turns, and surprising opportunities. Sometimes our choices lead us to where we are. At other times, chances open doors we never imagined walking through.
What matters most is not whether teaching was your original destination. What matters is that you are here now, the universe has brought you! Remember we don’t make life, life makes us!
When Chance Becomes Purpose
Many successful people will tell you that their greatest achievements began with an unexpected opportunity. A chance encounter, a spur-of-the-moment decision, or an unforeseen circumstance changed the direction of their lives.
The same can be true for teachers.
Perhaps you entered teaching temporarily and discovered a passion for working with young minds. Maybe you accepted a teaching position while exploring other options and found a sense of fulfilment you never expected. Perhaps teaching was not your first choice, but it became one of the best chances life offered you.
What began as a chance can evolve into a calling.
Every day, teachers are given opportunities that few professions can offer. They witness growth, celebrate achievements, encourage resilience, and leave lasting impressions on future generations. The impact of a teacher often extends far beyond the classroom and continues long after students have moved on.
Celebrate the Opportunity
Whether you arrived by choice or by chance, you have been entrusted with a remarkable responsibility.
You are shaping future leaders, innovators, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, next generation and citizens of our country. You are helping young learners discover their strengths, overcome challenges, and believe in themselves.
Many professions measure success through profits, products, or performance metrics. Teaching measures success through human growth and transformation.
Every lesson taught, every encouraging word spoken, every struggling learner supported, and every spark of curiosity ignited contributes to a better future.
What greater privilege could there be?
The Choice You Make Today
Perhaps the more important question is not "Did I come into teaching by choice or chance?"
Instead, ask yourself "Now that I am here, what choice will I make?"
Will you choose to embrace the profession wholeheartedly or choose to find joy in the daily opportunities to make a difference?
Will you choose to see challenges as stepping stones rather than obstacles or choose to grow, inspire, and continue learning alongside your students?
Every teacher has the power to make that choice.
A Profession Worth Celebrating
Teaching has evolved tremendously over the years. Today's educators are mentors, facilitators, innovators, counsellors, collaborators, and lifelong learners. The profession demands resilience, adaptability, creativity, and compassion.
Yet despite its challenges, it remains one of the few careers where the work of one individual can positively influence hundreds, even thousands, of lives over a lifetime.
So, whether you entered this profession by choice or by chance, celebrate the opportunity before you.
Because sometimes life gives us exactly what we need before we realize we need it.
And perhaps the greatest chance of all is discovering that where you are today is exactly where you are meant to be.
After all, teaching is not merely a job. It is a journey of purpose, impact, and possibility.
And that is something every teacher should be proud of.
I’m a very proud educator and you know what the universe brought me here!
