The Brain – A Magnificent Creation

Every human brain is a remarkable creation. Just as an individual's fingerprints are unique, so too is every person's brain. Consequently, it is neither natural nor reasonable to expect one person to think or learn exactly like another.

Since an individual's brain is shaped by both birth and environment, each person's thinking abilities and ways of processing information form a unique 'cognitive map.' The process by which the brain analyses observations and constructs meaning is highly sophisticated. Multiple parts of the brain work in coordination to achieve this remarkable function.

Therefore, when two people observe the same object, they may derive entirely different meanings from it. This phenomenon has profound implications for the learning process. Every individual differs in learning capacity, depth of understanding, learning methods, and the meanings they derive from experiences. For instance, if two people witness the same accident, their perspectives, thoughts, interpretations, and subsequent actions are likely to differ.

How does the human brain differ from that of other animals? Scientists state that a fully developed human brain weighs approximately 1,300–1,400 grams. In contrast, research shows that a gorilla's brain weighs about 450 grams, a dolphin's brain about 1,800 grams, and a whale's brain approximately 7,800 grams.

What is our brain made of? Scientific analysis has shown that it consists of approximately 78 percent water, 10 percent fat, and 8 percent protein. The weight and shape of the brain may vary slightly from person to person.

Every individual has unique likes, dislikes, interests, engagements, and experiences. Understanding this helps us realise why there is often a lack of consensus among people, and why the actions, imagination, and learning styles of students differ so widely.

Therefore, it is a sign of ignorance for parents at home or teachers at school to compare one child with another by saying, "Look at how he studies; why won't you study like him?"

John Medina, the world-renowned professor of brain science, states: "Just as various musical instruments play in unison during a grand concert, different parts of our brain constantly work together. In fact, a musical concert is always taking place inside our brains."

What is our role in this concert? Can we step in as intermediaries and alter the flow of the music? We shall come to understand this as we proceed..
