The Fetus and Learning – Some Facts
Unfolding The Canvas of Learning: Learning Step 02
Research has been conducted in many countries to determine whether the process of learning begins while the baby is still a fetus in the mother's womb.
Specialized centers such as Departments of Prenatal Cognitive Psychology have been established in various countries to research "learning and comprehension" during the fetal stage. Psychologist David Chamberlain states that the behavior of individuals who engage in violence within a society can often be traced back to factors present during their time in the womb, such as nutritional deficiencies, lack of attention, and the family environment in which they grew up. He further explains that early-life factors such as a lack of affection from parents or separation from them also play a role in understanding these behaviors.
A fetus begins to recognize its mother's voice at approximately sixteen weeks of gestation; by the twenty-seventh week, the baby’s reactions demonstrate an awareness of the specific characteristics of that voice. Moreover, the fetus is capable of perceiving the mother's emotional state.
Research conducted in Australia revealed that when a newborn who had been exposed to the sounds and voices of a Hollywood movie while in the womb—was shown the same film a few weeks after birth, the infant exhibited the exact same movements it had displayed during the fetal stage.
Scientist Sarah Billé states, based on her research, that fetal brain development is significantly influenced by the parents' mental and emotional states. It is also noted that children who develop in loving, peaceful environments experience superior brain growth. Thus, the process of learning begins as early as the prenatal stage.
Research indicates that the pain and distress experienced by a mother during pregnancy can impact the baby's brain development. Scientists suggest that issues such as stunted brain growth, developmental delays, and neurological disorders should be examined in the context of events that occurred during pregnancy. Similarly, children also acquire certain skills from their parents. It is said that if expectant parents have an interest in arts like music, the fetus develops an affinity for them during the crucial period of brain development, making it easier for the child to naturally gravitate towards these interests after birth.
Therefore, pregnancy is a time that demands great care from women; it is a period that shapes the destiny of the next generation. Advanced imaging techniques have captured the emotions displayed by the fetus within the mother's womb. Seeing images of a fetus expressing facial emotions helps us realize the importance of nurturing and protecting this delicate stage of life.
Thus, it is essential for parents to foster an environment filled with love, peace, and positivity during the child's formative stage in the womb.
