Recognizing sounds and its impact on emotions

Unfolding The Canvas of Learning: Learning Step 08

A child's developmental journey comprises several stages of milestones that mark their growth. Recognizing sounds and expressing emotions in response to them are significant events. When an infant just a few weeks old hears a sound, its eyes instinctively turn toward the source (a sensory response). Before the child develops a curiosity to understand the sound, a sense of fear may arise in its mind. At this moment, it is the mother's crucial duty to dispel that fear and convey a sense of safety. It is essential to observe the movement of the child's eyes in response to incoming sounds and act accordingly.

Sometimes, when sound vibrations trigger unbearable fear, the child expresses its distress through crying and physical movements. The mother must understand these emotions and engage with the child. By holding, cuddling, talking, and smiling at the child, she can help it emerge from a frightening situation.

When a child hears a sound repeatedly, the sound waves and their associated emotions become deeply imprinted in the brain. At this stage, the child moves past the initial fear and begins to accept the sound vibrations. Generally, one should avoid loud talking, screaming, or shouting when interacting with children; the impact of such intense emotional stimuli can sometimes persist for a long time.

In the past, lullabies sung by mothers or relatives while rocking the cradle played a vital role in nurturing a child's mental well-being. Music, a melodious voice, rich auditory experiences, and the beauty of words fostered a positive connection with the child's emotions, helping to create an atmosphere of love, peace, and security. Music plays a vital role in a child's developmental journey. Parents should recognize the importance of music in child-rearing and integrate it into this process.

When we speak of music here, we do not refer merely to film songs, but rather to music that fosters positive emotions and a gentle temperament. Current research on mental health has revealed how sound and words impact the brain, influencing an individual's thoughts and feelings and leaving a lasting imprint on their way of life.

Therefore, exposing children to music that promotes positive mental well-being during their formative years paves the way for them to lead a life enriched by healthy, positive emotions.
