We know that the process of learning begins while the child is still in the womb. However, the moment a child is separated from the mother's umbilical cord and enters this vast world is an emotionally stressful event. Stepping into an unfamiliar world from the absolute safety of the mother's womb evokes fear and a sense of insecurity in the child. Psychologists describe this as a journey from the known to the unknown.

Every newborn primarily seeks a safe environment. The mother bears immense responsibility in creating this. The mother's embrace conveys a sense of security to the child; therefore, her close physical presence is indispensable during the first few days of life.

Having grown accustomed to the mother's voice and emotions over several months, the child views anything else with suspicion and insecurity. Since the auditory patterns and emotional movements experienced in the womb remain in the child's memory, the child recognizes the mother as a symbol of safety.

Psychologists have conducted extensive research on the relationship between mother and child during the first few months of life. Experts explain how a mother should spend time and interact with her child.

We can cite a few examples here, eye-to-eye contact, often described poetically as 'meeting of the eyes' is crucial (visual engagement). This is said to be essential not only for dispelling the child's fear but also for fostering self-confidence. Furthermore, the child learns to recognize and familiarize itself with the emotions displayed on the mother's face. Thus, smiling while making eye contact is the first step in the art of building a relationship (relationship management).

Secondly, it is essential for the mother to talk to her child. The mother's language is the 'mother tongue.' The movements of a mother's lips become deeply imprinted in the mind of the child watching them; when these visual movements and the recorded sound waves merge and register together in the child's mind, the gateway to the process of learning is thrown open.

Thirdly, a mother's tender endearments delight the child's emotions. This creates a bridge between the mother's feelings and the child's own, fostering an emotional bond. This connection strengthens the relationship, encourages the child to look forward to further interactions with the mother, and stimulates a curiosity to learn.

Consequently, this provides a solid foundation for the child's cognitive development and understanding.

The child's quest for exploration begins within the first three months of life. Some psychologists playfully liken this to the spirit of mountain climbing, an adventurous pursuit. By observing where the child’s gaze wanders and how their hands and fingers move, one can appreciate the intensity of this exploratory drive.
