Why is Eye-to-Eye Contact necessary for children?

Unfolding The Canvas of Learning: Learning Step 12

Eye-to-eye contact' is a significant milestone in a child's developmental journey. We previously learned about this in the context of early development, occurring just weeks after birth; however, when a child reaches five or six months of age, this same interaction brings about different effects.

A child engaging in eye contact with its mother easily grasps her emotional states. Similarly, when others look at the child, it attempts to interpret the meaning behind their gaze. At times, the child may perceive another person's look as intimidating or frightening; instinctively, its eyes shift downward. Conversely, if a gaze conveys uncertainty or suspicion, the child’s eyes may roll upward or shift, reflecting its own internal reaction. Through eye contact, the child senses whether it is receiving an assurance of safety from others. In moments where it feels unsafe, it expresses its feelings by crying or signaling refusal.

A child who reads the eyes of others learns to recognize various expressions of anger, joy, sorrow, mockery, or bravado. Even if the child does not intellectually understand these specific emotions, it intuitively grasps that such expressions do not foster a sense of comfort or security.

This act of eye-to-eye contact lays the foundation for cognitive processes such as perception and understanding within the brain. It also helps safeguard and stabilize the child's emotional well-being. Therefore, parents should pay close attention to these interactions as their children engage with them and with others. Furthermore, eye-to-eye contact is highly beneficial for language development, the refinement of pronunciation, and the honing of body language. In early childhood, this can be described as 'face reading.'

According to psychological principles, eye-to-eye contact helps cultivate attention and focus; it also serves as a foundational step for deep listening and cognitive understanding of others' perspectives. Later in life, this learned skill aids in understanding behaviors, evaluating others, and managing relationships effectively.

Experts studying brain development have researched how this interaction influences mirror neurons. When there are impairments in brain development, the ability to make eye contact is often affected, which in turn significantly impacts other aspects of development.

In his book 'Social Intelligence', Daniel Goleman explains the importance of eye contact to a person's social intelligence. When living in a society and interacting with others, we glean a great deal of information from their eyes \often capturing what remains unspoken. As the saying goes, "The eyes spoke what the mouth did not." Therefore, we should pay close attention to eye contact during a child's developmental years.
